Even Experienced Podcasters Make Mistakes I did something recently that I couldn’t believe I let happen. On a recent episode of Who-Dey Weekly, I was working in the multitrack editor and I had muted one of my tracks while making an edit and didn’t think much of it. Once I had the show all edited up and ready to export I zoomed out as far as I could in Adobe Audition CC. Everything looked fine. I exported the file, imported it into iTunes and added an image to the mp3 file. This is where I failed. Had I simply hit the play button from this point, I would have noticed that I had 22 seconds of dead air at the beginning of my podcast episode. So two big lessons to learn here. Always play your mp3 file prior to publishing. You don’t necessarily have to play the whole file back, but skip through parts at least through to the end of your episode to make sure all of the production elements are in place. Also I’m very thankful I had saved my Audition project file, though the issue was at the beginning of the file and would have been easy to mix in my intro, because I had the project file saved I simply had to unmute the track and export the file again. Also, kudos to Darrell Williams of The Ohio Beercast for pointing out my mistake! Podcasting with Jeff Brown of the Read to Lead Podcast Jeff Brown has the pipes of a radio legend. Silky smooth and easy on the ears. You can tell he’s been broadcasting for over 26 years both in the radio and now podcasting industries. Though he originally went to IUPUI to study business, Jeff ended up in the radio business after enrolling into a broadcasting trade school course in Indianapolis. “The love affair with radio began when I was a kid actually. I used to love sitting in my room by myself, I had a little stereo that had a record player, an analog dial radio and an 8-track player built into it,” says Brown. “I used to pretend I was a DJ, I’d put on my headphones and cue up records and have the 8-track and the radio at the ready too just to pretend like I was on the air. I got a tape recorder for Christmas one year and I would record myself, and was just fascinated with the whole idea of audio and audio recordings.” After spending many years waking up at 2:30 a.m. to wear many hats at his radio stations, Jeff decided to choose freedom over security. In 2010 he started his own business, Brown Knows Media, and in July 2013 he launched his first podcast, The Read to Lead Podcast where he interviews different authors each week. “I realized that things I looked at as security like a steady paycheck, vacation days, health benefits and all those things, weren’t really security when they could be taken away from you,” says Brown. “I really desired to be on the other end of the spectrum which was freedom, no safety net, but freedom.” The Podcaster Academy In 2014 Jeff launched his new podcasting course, The Podcaster Academy and just wrapped his first class in February. “I’ve taken great pains to differentiate it from the other courses that are out there. I really wanted to dig into the host side, the talent side of the podcast,” Brown says. “One of the most valuable thing to me in my time in radio was that weekly meeting with a talent coach. I like to sit down one on one with podcasters and analyze what they’re doing in their shows.” To check out Jeff’s amazing work go visit ReadtoLeadPodcast.com and to get $100 off the Podcaster Academy, use promo code START at checkout over at PodcasterAcademy.com.
