Cease and Desist I’m ready for May. April couldn’t have been a worse month and it started on the first day. What I thought was a cruel April Fools joke quickly turned into extreme panic and depression. On April 1st, I received a notice from the NFL that one of my podcasts was infringing upon one of their marks, the word “whodey” was in violation. Well, that was the name of my podcast, Who-Dey Weekly. The show needed to be completely re-branded, new social media handles, new podcast cover art, a new podcast intro. Images needed to be removed and I had a very short time frame in which it needed to be completed. Have you ever received a cease and desist notice? How did you handle your situation? Your feedback is very much appreciated. Coming Up with New Show Names Thanks to Jayson Bates for sending in an email. He wanted to know how I come up with my show names and if I had any tips on how to do it. Here are a few things I try to do in my podcasting when I’m launching a new show or I’m forced to re-brand a current one. Come up with a list of as many show names as possible involving keywords surrounding your content. Narrow that list down to the 3-5 favorites in that list you might have. Do a Google search for each of the names to see if they’re currently being used. Do an iTunes search to see if those shows are already being published. Ask feedback from others, including those who aren’t podcasters like your friends, relatives, spouses etc. Go with your gut! How Loving the Lovable Losers made Corey Fineran a Podcasting Star Corey Fineran has been podcasting for many years but his show Ivy Envy is his pride and joy. He’s been producing this show for nearly 6 years and he does great work with it. He’s the host, producer, editor, social media guru. What he lacks in Photoshop skills he’s fortunate to have a co-host who handles the graphic side of things. That’s what makes Ivy Envy so great, it’s a total team effort, despite covering a team that hasn’t been winning in quite some time. “We started the podcast and they have been the worst Cubs team in history,” says Fineran. “They have been a combined 115 games under .500. I think that it takes someone special to be a Cubs fan. What I have found is that with our podcast, we have become a safe haven for the die hard fans to help them get through this rough stretch.” When Corey first started podcasting, he actually started podcasting with his wife Tawny from Mommy’s Cocktail Hour. Their first podcast was Sounds from the Attic, a music podcast, and they both were using USB headsets. Eventually Corey upgraded his studio and is now using MXL990’s and a compressor limiter gate, the MDX4600. Podcasting at Work Corey is one of the few people I know that actually gets paid to do a podcast for his employer. “I really like what I do in education. I work with high school students with disabilities and I work with them on employment stuff. The podcast helps provide these students with interview tips and employment tips so I really like what I do,” says Fineran. Because of his podcast, Corey has had the opportunity to speak publicly around the state of Illinois at different educational conferences about podcasting and social media.
