This episodes guest is a very special one, Michael Williams is a fellow Storyteller but also the man who helped guide me on my storytelling journey.
Had he listened to his father, Michael might have become a steelworker in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Instead, he dreamed of becoming a writer telling stories. Needing money, Michael disappeared underground to work in a mine in Northern Ontario. Ironically, an old-timer informed him that the mine was no place for an imagination and urged him to return to the surface and follow his dream. Thus began a long, circuitous journey travelling North America and Europe, working as a counsellor to troubled adolescents and their families, becoming a gigging musician, studying English Literature, and moving to Scotland where he earned a Ph.D. and began a teaching career. In 2005, he left full-time teaching to focus on his passion for storytelling and writing, a passion which has taken him across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Canada. Finally, in 2017, Michael left his beloved Scotland and returned to Canada. Soon after, he joined the Board of the Storytellers of Canada, began writing with the Hamilton Mountain Writers Guild (and won an award for his first published short story "All Things Shall Pass"). He tells stories locally with the Burlington Storytellers Guild and travels to do occasional house concerts. He's also the host of the "Teller and the Tale" Radio show on Blues and Roots Radio and a co-host of "Just a Minute Films" where he and his brother Mark feature weekly short films they've created. And finally, his latest project is teaching an online course to graduate students at Glasgow School of Art's Innovation School entitled "Storytelling as Method in Design Innovation". At 67, Michael's not slowing down anytime soon, saying, "I guess I'm just a late bloomer . . . but better late than not at all."
