For the second consecutive day, the Tigers meshed good pitching and good offense to topple the Athletics 7-3. A day removed from posting a season high nine runs against Sonny Gray and company, the Tigers new look lineup, with J.D. Martinez batting 2nd, produced once again. Martinez reached base in 3 of his 5 plate appearances to help spark the Tigers for the second time in 24 hours. A's starter Chris Bassitt dropped his 6th consecutive decision dating back to last August. Bassitt's undoing came in the 3rd inning when the first four batters reached base. Anthony Gose and Ian Kinsler led off with back-to-back doubles and J.D. and Victor Martinez followed with a walk and a single. All four runners would come across to score as Nick Castellanos delivered the final damage with his second double in as many innings. Bassitt was unable to recover in the 4th inning where he allowed a leadoff walk to Jose Iglesias and a 2-run bomb to Anthony Gose which gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Bassitt's final line: 3.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 94 pitches (54 strikes) After allowing 12 runs (10 earned) over 7.1 innings in his last two starts, Anibal Sanchez badly needed to turn things around - and he did. Sanchez tweaked his delivery to feature a full turn (back facing batter) and found early success. Contrary to those two outings, Sanchez wasn't hit very hard and struck out nine hitters. It was hit or miss for Sanchez though, he struggled with his control and walked seven batters, the most he's walked since his time with the Marlins in September of 2009. His lone mistake was offering up a solo jack by Stephen Vogt to lead off the A's 4th inning. The result was a truly bizarre final line. Sanchez's final line: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 9 K, 114 pitches (63 strikes) Kyle Ryan, Blaine Hardy and Francisco Rodriguez came on to pitch the final 3.1 innings allowing just 2 hits and a run.
