On this episode of the Voices of Reason podcast, Jasen Lee and Amy Donaldson are joined by noted writer and racial justice educator Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race. They discuss various issues surrounding growing up and experiencing life through a 'colorblind' lens and then realizing the stark differences of living life in America as a black, brown or other minority people.
Debby explains how a well-intentioned program like the G.I. Bill was developed to help returning military veterans when they came home to gain access to education and homeownership but in practice discriminated against minorities and created a wealth gap that exists generations later. She also talks about her own personal journey from well-meaning, yet uninformed person of (white) privilege to the more self-aware, culturally sensitive person she has become today.
