‘The Secret’ left everyone thinking they can sit back, do nothing and visualize what they want in life and it will happen. I’m here to tell you that it is not a passive process. Today, I will let you in on the three steps to utilizing positive visualization effectively without setting yourself up for failure.
Every day, for 30-days, I visualized what I wanted from my business, my life and my relationships. I visualized how it felt to achieve those outcomes. I found that at the end of each day, I had less motivation to do the work required to get where I wanted. As humans we are averse to sacrifice and enduring pain, but it is needed for accomplishment.
How do you utilize visualization in a meaningful way? There are three steps. The first step is positive visualization. Think about what you want, where you want to be and how it will feel. A good exercise to try is visualizing your perfect day in every aspect. Doing this helps get your nervous system used to doing it, preventing the negative reaction to uncertainty that leads to self-sabotage.
The second step is to reverse engineer what you want and plot what it takes to achieve. Understand the process and understand that it is not always a good time. Become comfortable in the process and don’t ignore the hard aspects.
The final step is to utilize mental contrasting. This is the process of picturing the positives and the negatives of the journey. Having realistic expectations is key to your future success. Prepare for what you don’t know so you can better overcome it when it happens, because it will.
